Underneath The Masticating Table
2025, Spreepark Artspace, Berlin
For the research residency of MOTHS collective at Spreepark Art Space – located in East Berlin in the former GDR – we took the food culture of a country that does not longer exist as our startingpoint, digesting our investigations into a speculative menu of 18 dishes.
The work features a rotating lazy susan that holds seven ceramic dishes form the menu, and a set of Jingdezhen porcelain. The tableware reimagines the traditional German Zwiebelmuster by depiciting two of the Park's neobiota: Reynoutria japonica & Ailanthus altissima.
Outside of the gallery, a historic porcelain set found in the River Spree is displayed, along side the full menu. In collaboration with the adjecent EI-12437B restaurant, five of the speculative dishes were adapted and included on their menu.
MOTHS collective consists of Yujia Ban, Xiaolu Yan, Hanwen Zhang and Niel de Vries
Ceramic production: Yansuan and Dalida Georgiou-Achmet
